We joined together to prevent proposed legislation that would monopolize the waste management industry and make Los Angeles’ economic climate even more unfriendly for business.

Is a deregulated market a messy market? You bet. Just look at the airlines. They change flight schedules more often than Republicans change front-runners. It’s difficult to recall which airline is in bankruptcy this month.
But those are problems for the airlines to figure out. Airline deregulation in 1978 gave consumers a true benefit: Command of the market. We have a bounty of flights to choose from. At dramatically lower prices than before 1978.

Matthew Kotanjian’s great-grandfather started recycling milk bottles in downtown Los Angeles back in 1906. He eventually turned that enterprise into Aaa Rubbish Inc., a Bell Gardens waste hauling company that Kotanjian now runs. p>
The company has survived wars, recessions and competition from giant national waste haulers. But Kotanjian fears that a proposed franchise system for waste haulers could put his company out of business. p>

Los Angeles leaders will this week begin debating a controversial plan to radically change the way trash gets collected from businesses and apartment buildings in the city.
